- Description of the flood hazard in Palm Beach County.
- The importance of having flood insurance to protect your building and its contents. Did you know that Homeowners and Business owners insurance usually does not cover damage from rising waters?
- Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Do not drive through hazardous flood water. Roads may be impossible to tell apart from ponds or canals.
- A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water and knock an adult off their feet. Flood waters are contaminated with toxic substances.
- Learn the difference between EVACUATION zone and FLOOD zone. Know your zones! Type in an address to find the EVACUATION zone and the FLOOD zone in which a property is located.
- Ways that you can help prevent your building from flooding, including six retrofitting measures, construction of levees and floodwalls, and dry floodproofing. Remember, some flood protection measures may need a building permit and others may not be safe for your type of building, so be sure to talk to the Community Development Department before you make any alterations to your property at 561-881-3319.
- Floodplain Regulations must be adopted by the Town of Lake Park and all municipalities in Palm Beach County to manage development in the Town’s floodplain to prevent increased flooding and minimize future flood damage. Click HERE to see the Town’s Chapter 60 – Floodplain Regulations. Development is broadly defined by the NFIP to include any man-made change to land, such as grading, filling, dredging, and the construction or improvement of structures. All floodplain development needs a permit. The permitting process can keep your neighbors from doing something on their property that could cause flooding problems on your property. If you see development occurring without permits, protect your rights by reporting violators to 561-881-3319.
Natural resources provide floodplain protection. These are some natural and beneficial functions of floodplains:
- Open, unpaved areas are part of our stormwater management system; they collect and store stormwater runoff during rainfall events.
- When rainfall drains into the ground, it helps reduce flooding and recharges the drinking water supply.Unpaved land filters stormwater runoff as it seeps through the ground and into the aquifer.
- Provides breeding and feeding grounds for fish and other wildlife.
- Protects habitats for rare and endangered species.
- It is important to keep these unpaved areas open and clean!

The Town of Lake Park participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a federal program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that enables property owners to purchase insurance protection against flooding losses. Since Lake Park properly manages a floodplain Ordinance, the Town’s home and business owners are eligible to participate in NFIP and are eligible for a discount on flood insurance.
NFIP coverage is available to all owners of insurable property, including buildings and/or contents; owners and renters may insure their personal property; and builders of buildings in the course of construction, condominium associations, and owners of residential condominium units. A policy may be purchased from any licensed property insurance agent or broker in good standing with the state or through any agent representing a Write Your Own (WYO) company.
