New FEMA Flood Zone Maps

Informational Open House Events Scheduled

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released updated flood zone maps. As a result, thousands more Palm Beach County residents have been added to high or higher-risk flood zones (aka Special Flood High Hazard Areas).

The county’s Planning, Zoning and Building Department (PZB) has created an informational page on its website, New FEMA Flood Maps, for the public which includes a countywide property search tool for residents to determine their flood zones. Additionally, the website provides other important related information, including links to FEMA, the pending FEMA flood maps, municipalities affected, tips on how the county can help and more. The pending maps become effective December 20, 2024 requiring Palm Beach County property owners’ immediate attention.

Property owners required to have a new flood insurance policy are encouraged to obtain them as soon as possible. Anyone with an existing National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy is urged to maintain their current policy. For additional information, visit FEMA.gov.

Additionally, PZB has partnered with the Palm Beach County League of Cities and scheduled three public outreach open house events (listed below). The events will include representatives from the county, municipalities, FEMA and the insurance industry. The public is urged to attend to obtain more information on this important topic.

High Temps-01

It’s VERY hot out, and these high temperatures are expected to last through the rest of this week, and possibly beyond. It is important to try to stay safe during extreme temperatures, and Palm Beach County has provided the following tips to help prevent heat-related illnesses:

  • Never leave children, vulnerable adults, or pets in a parked car. Temperatures in a parked car can rise quickly which can cause death for children, vulnerable adults, or pets. If you see a person or pet in a parked vehicle on a hot day, call 9-1-1 immediately.

  • Limit time outside. Try to avoid being outside during the midday heat and spend more time inside when possible.

  • Utilize public spaces, and take advantage of public spaces with air conditioning when possible. Use this time to read a book or surf the internet at the Lake Park Public Library; spend some time in a shaded area of one of the Town’s parks, or plan your shopping for the middle of the day to stay cool when it is hottest out.

  • Stay hydrated. It is important to drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty

  • Do not get too much sun, and apply sunscreen if you are going to be in the sun.

Additional heat-related preparedness information can be found at FEMA and OSHA.
