Read with your Child

General Tips for Reading Aloud with your child:

  • Allow your child to see you reading.
  • Read slowly and with expression.
  • Take turns reading a page or a chapter with your child.
  • Keep plenty of reading materials at home.
  • Make a fun event out of visiting the library with your child.
  • Involve your child in selecting books from the library.
  • Make sure that both you and your child enjoy the book.
  • If a story isn't working, it is OK to stop reading, and choose another book.
  • It is never too early to start reading to your child And don't stop reading, as the child gets older.
  • As you read together, ask open-ended questions about the story that help your child to think about what you are reading, such as: “What would you do if you were in this situation?”
  • It only takes fifteen minutes a day to create a reader.
  • Remember that reading not only improves your child's performance in school, but also adds enrichment and beauty to his or her life.
